How the Hutchinson stopper actually worked
The mechanism is beautifully simple:
The steel wire is bent into an hourglass shape and pinched through a small rubber gasket at the wide bottom. When the bottler filled the bottle with soda and inserted the stopper, the gasket rested against the internal shoulder just below the neck. Then he capped the bottle by pulling the wire up through the mouth — the gasket was drawn up against the ledge from below, sealing it. Carbonation pressure inside the bottle pushed the gasket harder against the ledge, so the more fizz, the tighter the seal.

Every so often a new collector wants to demonstrate the mechanism by carbonating a Hutch bottle. Please don't. Antique glass with decades of stress micro-fractures can and does fail under carbonation pressure — and the failure mode is shrapnel.
